Marma point massage is a deeply restorative and transformative healing technique which is used in traditional Ayurvedic massage, or abhyanga.
Abhyanga (meaning oil massage) is a unique warm oil massage therapy that uses the ancient wisdom of Ayurvedic pressure points to heal the body, mind and spirit.Â
How Do Ayurvedic Massages Work?
Abhyanga massages use Marma points, which are ancient energetic pressure points that were discovered centuries ago in India. They were meticulously recorded by doctors and healing experts. There are over 100 of them in total and the points are believed to form the basis of acupuncture points. They correspond to different organs and systems in the body.
Marmas are regarded in Ayurvedic medicine to be areas which contain prana, or life-force energy and allow it to flow properly through the body. In ancient times they were called ‘bindu’, meaning secret dot, or mystic point. They are considered to be doorways to pathways that activate healing. They are a bridge between body, mind and soul and are often located where veins, arteries, bones, joints and tendons intersect.
Marma points are a vital aspect of Ayurvedic healing power. They are regarded as doors or pathways to change and improve the biochemistry of the body by activating its inner pharmacy. The Ayurvedic massage therapy that I practice is traditional and stimulates these energetic pressure points, or marma points in the body by gently massaging them.
Marmas medically are known as neurolymphatic points. When touched at the right time by a professional trained in ayurvedic medicine, these energetic pressure points facilitate the deepest levels of healing, releasing stagnant energy and profoundly affecting the body, mind and spirit. Stimulating them through massage helps to flush out toxins from the lymphatic system. Massaging marma points allows the body to produce exactly what is needed when it comes to hormones and other neurochemicals that are essential for the healthy functioning of the body.
Neurochemicals help with:
- Breathing and muscle movement
- Memory and learning
- Heartbeat and blood pressure
- Thinking and feeling
- Stress response and hormone regulation
- Sleeping, healing and ageing.
- Digestion, hunger and thirst
Marma points are used in Abhyanga ( Ayurvedic warm herbal oil massage) to improve circulation, help release blocked energy and to enhance the body’s natural ability to heal. The massages promote emotional balance and spiritual growth. They are considered both curative and preventative in Ayurvedic medicine and along with other therapies are used to treat a wide range of issues, including chronic pain, stress, fatigue, addiction, anxiety and depression, urinary, heart, liver, hormonal and digestive issues as well as skin conditions. They are particularly recommended for new mums, as giving birth can deplete the tissues of the body. They are also wonderful in helping to assist the body to rebalance during and after natural shifts like the menopause.
