Self-love Soundjourney 15th of February

Love, love, love!

The most powerful force in the universe. It is all around us and always within us. An invisible yet ever present force.

The deepest form of it is universal love. This is an invitation to tap into its energy and bathe in its beauty.

Loving ourselves and allowing love to flow through us is a powerful practice. Embodying universal love means becoming aware of our spiritual nature and the oneness of all that exists in this world and beyond. When you experience Universal love, you start to express love in everything you do. The first vital step towards this is self-love and healing – which in turn enables us to take better care of ourselves and one another.

Yet we do not live in a world where love is always prioritised and it is easy to forget our spiritual nature, or get knocked off this path – we can experience people acting from fear, ego and delusion causing suffering and harm to other beings- and if we are not careful we can also fall into these very same traps – which is why it’s vital to regularly come home to ourselves, to remember our true nature as an expression of divine love.

It’s important to do things which remind us that there is infinite love for us in the universe, which supports us and reaches much farther and deeper into everything we are, everything we do and everything we will ever be – I call this cultivating and experiencing love beyond the illusion.

This Saturday the 15th of February at three pm I’m holding a Seven Dials Soundjourney Self-love special! It will feature the harp, gongs, tibetan bowls and gentle percussion. And perhaps even a poem or a mantra for self-love and healing.

Suitable for singles, couples, friends and family members. Let’s spend Saturday showing ourselves some love! LGBTQIA+ friendly

Limited spaces available below:

Sound Therapy

Have you ever used the power of sound to balance your mind, body and spirit?

Research shows that sound affects us on an elemental level. Vibrations in soundwaves impact our cells, nerve, brain, muscle and organ function.

For example, we know that hearing a loud drill for long periods can damage our hearing, or hearing a loud bang can make us jump! Alternatively the sound of the waves crashing on the beach, or listening to our favourite song can be very relaxing and uplifting and put us in a positive mood! Sound therapy causes physiological, bio-chemical and neural reactions as our minds and bodies sync to the vibrations of sound.

Ancient Medicine & Modern Science

Sound therapy exists across many ancient traditions. In Ayurveda mantras, or sacred songs are used to bring balance and harmony to the body, mind and spirit and bijas – or seed sounds are used to re-align the chakras.

Sound therapy can be delivered personally, or in the form of soundjourneys. It is a relaxing experience and also one that offers hope for our immune systems.

In one Californian study public health experts reviewed centuries old Eastern practices to look at how they could be used to tackle chronic stress, which is linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, anxiety and depression. They found ‘the return to traditional ages- old medicine yields new promise for the reduction- or potentially elimination of chronic stress.’

It is well-known that chronic stress impairs the autonomic nervous system, which regulates bodily processes like breathing and blood pressure by hyper-activation of the sympathetic nervous system – also known as ‘fight or flight’ mode. To reduce the impact of this on our bodies, it’s important to activate its parasympathetic state, or the ‘rest and digest’ state. This is important because disorders of the autonomic nervous system can affect any body part or process.

One study involving sixty two people looked at the effect of sound meditation with Tibetan singing bowls on mood, anxiety, pain and spiritual well-being and found that feelings of spiritual well-being significantly increased across all participants. They also found significant reductions in anxiety, tension, anger, depression and chronic pain.

Want to give it a try? You can either book a tailored one-to-one session with me at About Balance in Brighton on Weds and Sundays, or come to one of my soundjourneys. The next ones coming up are on the 10th and 31st of January! I will be working with fellow sound therapist Naomi from Resounding. And tickets for the 10th are discounted.

Booking early on the link below is recommended.

Ayurvedic Massage Therapy

Marma point massage is a deeply restorative and transformative healing technique which is used in traditional Ayurvedic massage, or abhyanga.

Abhyanga, meaning oil massage is a completely unique warm oil massage therapy that uses ancient wisdom to heal the body, mind and spirit.

How Do The Massages Work?

Marma points are ancient energetic pressure points and were discovered centuries ago in India. They were meticulously recorded by doctors and healing experts. There are over 100 of them in total and the points are believed to form the basis of acupuncture points. They correspond to different organs and systems in the body.

Marmas are regarded in Ayurvedic medicine as areas which contain prana, or life-force energy and allow it to flow properly through the body. In ancient times they were called ‘bindu’, meaning secret dot, or mystic point. They are considered to be doorways to pathways that activate healing. They are a bridge between body, mind and soul and are often located where veins, arteries, bones, joints and tendons intersect.

The Ayurvedic massage therapy that I practice stimulates these energetic pressure points, or marma points in the body by gently massaging them. Marma points are a vital aspect of Ayurvedic healing power. They are regarded as doors or pathways to change and improve the biochemistry of the body by activating its inner pharmacy.

Marmas medically are known as neurolymphatic points. When touched at the right time by a professional trained in ayurvedic medicine, these energetic pressure points facilitate the deepest levels of healing, releasing stagnant energy and profoundly affecting the body, mind and spirit. Stimulating them through massage helps to flush out toxins from the lymphatic system. Massaging marma points allows the body to produce exactly what is needed when it comes to hormones and other neurochemicals that are essential for the healthy functioning of the body.

Neurochemicals help with:

  • Breathing and muscle movement
  • Memory and learning
  • Heartbeat and blood pressure
  • Thinking and feeling
  • Stress response and hormone regulation
  • Sleeping, healing and ageing.
  • Digestion, hunger and thirst

Marma points are used in Abhyanga ( Ayurvedic warm herbal oil massage) to improve circulation, help release blocked energy and to enhance the body’s natural ability to heal. The massages promote emotional balance and spiritual growth. They are considered both curative and preventative in Ayurvedic medicine and along with other therapies are used to treat a wide range of issues, including chronic pain, stress, fatigue, addiction, anxiety and depression, urinary, heart, liver, hormonal and digestive issues as well as skin conditions. They are particularly recommended for new mums, as giving birth can deplete the tissues of the body and they are also wonderful in helping to assist the body to rebalance during and after natural shifts like the menopause.

How Do I Book In?

Come and try one for yourself. You can book an Ayurvedic massage therapy with me in central Brighton at Silk, off London Road or at About Balance in the North Laine. Please visit the book now section to reserve your spot.

Please note if you are looking for a whole body approach to healing, that these massages are traditionally used along with help with diet and lifestyle advice or herbs. If you have a health condition, or suspect an imbalance and would like help with these elements too, then it is best to book in for a Clinical Ayurvedic consultation first. Please wear dark clothing when coming in for your massage, as I use herbal oils. If you need step free access – this is possible at both sites if I know in advance and I would be delighted to help, so please feel free to contact me.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a condition related to the immune system. It causes non-inflammatory achiness, tenderness and stiffness in soft tissue ( muscles, ligaments and bursa)

It can cause significant distress, particularly as it is condition that is mostly diagnosed by exclusion, once all the conditions that produce chronic pain have been ruled out. This can be frustrating for clients on their healing journey, many of whom tell me that they have experienced difficulty in gaining an initial diagnosis.

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, it may be due to an auto-immune condition, or occur secondary to a virus, or a Lyme’s disease-type of infection. Stress plays an important role in it.

Pain is usually located in areas that are known as ‘trigger points’. Eighteen have been noted overall and pain in eleven of these is considered characteristic of the condition. These trigger points overlap considerably with ayurvedic marma points, which are ancient energetic pressure points used by Ayurvedic practitioners to help the body heal and rebalance.

Fibromyalgia is considered in Ayurveda to be a condition of primary vata dosha imbalance. Aggravation of vata results in hypersensitivity to pain. Although some clients may also have inflammation. It is generally considered a non-inflammatory condition – so the role of pitta is secondary, if it is present.

Its nidana, or cause is a dry, light and cold diet combined with irregular habits and high stress levels.

Ayurvedic care involves stress reduction techniques, gentle massage, the application of heat and the use of nervine tonics and analgesic herbs to benefit the nervous system. Treatment should focus on all of the affected tissues and the patient should be encouraged to adopt routines to rejuvenate the body and tonify the adrenal glands. If ama is present, it should removed by a cleanse beforehand.

Strong rejuvenative therapies should be considered as the cornerstone of treatment. This includes regular abhyanga, shirodara and may also include chakra dara, anuvasana basti and gentle marma treatments. The condition appears to improve with exercise and because pain is an issue, starting slowly and building up confidence in an exercise and yoga regimen is important.

I have noticed that the people that I help with fibromyalgia really benefit from sound therapy sessions too. And many report a reduction in pain after a mixture of abhyanga and sound therapy. I encourage my clients to make diet and lifestyle changes slowly over time, so that it is manageable.

Although the treatment may significantly reduce pain, everyone is different and will have different results. The success of treatment depends on how committed the person is to their healing journey outside of the clinic too. Ayurveda isn’t a quick fix when conditions are chronic, but it is a powerful one that works on a deeper level over time.

If you would like help with managing fibromyalgia, or other conditions related to the immune system then please feel free to book in for a Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist consultation. N.B If you aren’t quite ready and in the space in your life to make diet and lifestyle changes yet, then you can always book in for a full-body abhyanga and sound therapy first and decide to choose a Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist appointment later on.

Wishing you blessings on your healing journey x

SHIRODARA

Are you in need of some serious rest and relaxation? Why not discover an ancient secret to good health, right here in the heart of Brighton’s North Laine.

Shirodara is available at my Ayurvedic practice at About Balance on Gloucester Place. It is one of my favourite treatments to deliver – especially after a full-body abhyanga. It is so lovely to see clients who come in feeling burnt out emerging from oil infused marma point bliss! If I took before and after photos I’m convinced there would be a queue around the corner and everyone would want one!

Shirodara is a really soothing treatment that creates the opportunity for deep meditation and helps to powerfully calm the body, mind and spirit. It is designed to detox the nervous system and break circulating thoughts. It is a wonderful treatment that puts the body into a state of blissful relaxation. The relaxing treatment begins with a head massage before warm oil is poured in a continuous stream on the third eye/ forehead.

Shirodara is used in Ayurvedic medicine to help treat anxiety, chronic fatigue, PTSD, stress, self-critical thoughts, migraines, eye conditions, headaches, burnout, overwhelm and to improve hair condition.

It is a good idea to keep your ears out of the wind afterwards, so be sure to bring a hat!

Read what one client said about the treatment below and come and experience this ancient and beautiful secret to good health and inner calm.

Book yours at About Balance by calling 01273 686882

I can't recommend Emma highly enough. She is a great therapist. the session was amazing: I felt it worked on so many levels - physical, emotional and spiritual. Physically, I definitely felt very relaxed and and actually fell asleep during the treatment. but what made it a particularly good treatment for me was that it felt healing. Healing in the sense that I had an internal dialogue play out in my head during the treatment that helped me resolve some emotional issues that had been burdening me for some time. It goes without saying that it's not only a well trained therapist - but a person with very special qualities and attributes - that can facilitate that kind of personal experience for a client during a treatment. I felt revived and energised for days afterwards.

Fundraiser For The Hammad Family In Gaza

This is a beautiful opportunity to do something good for humanity, to create good karma and shine your love out into the world…

The Hammad family are a sweet family – and like many Palestinians, have been suffering immensely in the genocide. Moin Hammad is a 33 year old former personal trainer from Gaza. He used to dream of owning a gym, now his only wish is to survive and for his family to be safe.

Moin has elderly parents – his mum is a retired nurse. He also has a blind sister. His brother has a newborn baby. The Hammad family had their home destroyed by bombs in Khan Younis. They fled to a tent in a refugee camp, it was deemed a safe area, but they have recently had to flee from there too after it was bombed. They want to escape to Egypt when the border opens.

Moin is a caring individual and went back to help his friend escape the refugee camp that was attacked. He been shot and injured while trying to help his friend’s family carry their tent and belongings. He needs painkillers and medical supplies and his parents are sick and also need food which has become scarce and expensive since the genocide against Palestinians escalated in Gaza.

Please be a rainbow in their storm and show them the world does care – donate, or share his go fund me link: https://gofund.me/c0926913
