Harp and Gong for Gaza

Like so many of us in the UK and beyond, I have at times felt pretty helpless and sad for humanity watching the genocide unfold in Gaza. I believe that universal intelligence has a greater plan that we can’t always see and I also believe in creating good karma and doing my best to alleviate suffering in this lifetime. So I decided that instead of feeling overwhelmed by the injustice to try to empower myself and others to do whatever we can to create positive vibrations and effect positive loving change in our communities.

One way I did this was protesting outside a weapons factory, contacting MPs and various institutions to complain about the mistreatment of Palestinians and protestors, boycotting Barclays bank and avocados and Hummus sold by Waitrose – that originate from occupied territories.

I have had appeals to help people directly and I am sorry that I am not in a financial position to help you all. I can however try to do what I can and I would really like to share a soundjourney with you to help a family there. It will be deeply relaxing and peace inducing. Mats, bolsters and blankets are provided – all that you have to do is get a ticket, lay down and relax to the harp, gong and tibetan bowls with gentle percussion. Sometimes a healing mantra pops out too!

All profits will go to the family of Moin Hammad ( his nickname is Moeen) For the cautious – I am a former investigative journalist and have checked his passport and identity and have been in communication with him for some time. I have also donated previously. He has a blind sister and his brother has a newborn baby as well as elderly parents that he needs to try to keep safe and alive. They are a sweet family and were displaced from Khan Younis to a tent in a refugee camp and have recently had to flee from there. They want to escape to Egypt.

Please buy a ticket to help them and if you can’t come – please consider donating to https://gofund.me/8a806363

There has never been a more important time to get together as a community from diverse backgrounds and organise, while cultivating peace, love and understanding in our hearts.

Thanks for your beautiful hearts and I hope to see you soon! Let’s create an energy of love and peace. The soundjourney is multi-faith and LGBTQIA+ friendly. All beautiful souls are welcome.

New LGBTQIA+ Service launched

I absolutely love what I do and seeing people transform and regain their glow and heal is such a wonderful privilege to witness. I am dedicated to making my practice as inclusive as possible because that’s where my heart is. I feel the healing power of Ayurveda is of great benefit not just to individuals but to humanity. The treatments work on the physical body and also the energy field to help clear trauma and trapped energy.

I am excited to announce that I will be working at Silk in Brighton on Saturdays. It is a new LGBTQIA+ massage and sound therapy space. I would be honoured if you came for treatment there.

I became an LGBTQIA+ ally at University in the nineties. As someone who is half-Indian there were times when I felt that I didn’t fit in anywhere. When you experience racism from both sides you think deeply about why these labels placed upon loving beings even matter. I have always felt accepted, understood and loved within the LGBTQIA+ spaces. Seeing my best friends from University come out to their families and talking to them about their experiences of bullying at school gave me a real insight into how painful and unjust homophobia is, as well as a sense of being seen, of solidarity and mutual uplifting, enriching, love, respect, care and support.

In my previous career I was an investigative journalist and I spent six months making a film about transgender rights. It was a real eye-opener into some of the awful things that transgender people experience. It was also a real delight to spend time being educated by some incredibly clever, insightful and talented trans people. The bravery to be yourself in a society trying to condition and control people takes real strength, heart and courage. I met many beautiful beings who still really inspire me.

Ayurveda is about finding your inner light and letting it shine. It’s about understanding and celebrating your unique constitution and discovering who you are buried under layers of conditioning and letting go of that which is no longer serves you. It aligns mind, body and spirit. If this calls to you, then I would be honoured to be your guide.

N.B My appointments at Silk are also open to people who aren’t in this community and you are most welcome- if you are a respectful and supportive ally too. Please feel free to book in to Silk via the links on this website. I also still operate from About Balance in the North Laine on Weds 10-2 and Sundays 10-5, call: 01273 686882 to book there. If you need step free access at either venue please get in touch and I’ll be happy to help.

With lots of love, solidarity and excitement!

Welcoming In Winter

One of the ancient secrets to good health in Ayurveda is learning how to live in harmony with our bodies and the environment. Realising our true oneness with nature and feeling aligned in mind, body and spirit can in turn lead us to create more balanced and healthier lives.

Ayurveda, or “the science of life” originates from India. It is the oldest healthcare system in the world and is profoundly healing. It is a more than 5,000 year old medical, diet, lifestyle and spiritual science that splits the world into elements. These elements are air, fire, water, earth and ether (or empty space) And they make up biological forces in our body called the doshas. These doshas are bio-energetic forces present in every cell and organ system, we are each born with a unique mixture of these energies, which is known as our prakruti. But they can become imbalanced for many reasons including life circumstances, grief, stress, pollution, improper diet and by not living in harmony with the seasons.

These elements are present within our bodies and also in the environment in which we live. In the environment they rise and fall at different times of the year which impacts our bodies. In the Winter time Vata, or air and ether is high – so we need to learn how to cultivate the opposite qualities to the cold, light, dry qualities of Vata so that we don’t suffer. Common winter ailments are things like anxiety mixed with feeling low as the imbalanced wind, aggravated by the doshic tide in the environment can fluctuate in our systems. At this time we are likely to need warmth and heavy, moist nourishing foods like hearty soups and stews containing heavier earthy elements like root vegetables that are warming and appropriate to our constitutions.

With this in mind full-body abhyanga is an especially brilliant ayurvedic massage for this time of year – as it cultivates the opposite qualities of Vata and helps to pacify it. It is a soothing, restorative and deeply healing warm oil massage that is excellent at pacifiying the Vata dosha, partly due to its heavy, warm and moist qualities which counteract the cold. It increases and regulates circulation and energy flow. The massage was designed by ancient Vedic physicians thousands of years ago to unblock toxins in the physical body and clear both physical and energetic channels in the body. It uses marma points – which were the precursors to meridians used in Chinese medicine and also herbs which pacify Vata. Many clients tell me the massages are transformational, which is always wonderful to hear and they report feeling better for a considerable amount of time after the treatment ends.

N.b They are designed to be preventative and curative health measures. People with chronic health conditions, or imbalances that have been going on for some time will usually need more than one – depending on the length and severity of the illness and may need some extra help to recover with diet too.

True beauty is much more than skin deep……

Ageing is a natural part of life and is a wonderful privilege to be celebrated.

However premature ageing of the skin can be a sign that we are not looking after ourselves as much as we could be.

I’m 43 and people often ask me why I look younger than I am.

Ayurvedic face massage is one of my Ayurvedic beauty routine secrets! It works by massaging ancient energetic pressure points called marmas. The massages are designed to heal imbalance and prevent deterioration and premature ageing of the face that is caused by prana, or life-force energy not flowing properly.

The face massages I do firm and plump the face, increase circulation and smooth out wrinkles. They are for people looking for a relaxing and healthier natural alternative to the injections, fillers and facelifts that have become a commonplace choice for women today. There is no judgement here btw. Everyone must do what they feel is right for them. I firmly believe in supporting and celebrating other women and respecting their choices.

I have also studied Ayurvedic dermatology which tells us that we shouldn’t put anything on to our skin that we wouldn’t be willing to eat – as toxins can sink in to the deeper dhatus, or tissues of the body – which is why I prefer the natural route for myself.

The face massages that I perform in Brighton nourish the skin with oil that contains herbs that are excellent for skin like frankincense and rose. They use a number of points and pressure techniques to help boost collagen and smooth out wrinkles naturally. They will leave you glowing and restore vitality to the face.

I hope that more people come and experience the magic of this ancient wisdom. Not only is it good for you (as the points correspond to a number of organs and help improve certain conditions) It also makes your already perfect and lovely face look wonderful too. It’s a win-win!

I love hearing people snore in my treatments too! And this is a great one for that! It makes me very happy to see people relax and get their glow back.

You will see the difference after one. But six sessions weekly are recommended initially, followed by a once a month top up. Book in for one this Sunday, or Weds by calling About Balance on 01273 686882. Slots are available between 12 and 4pm on Sunday and 10-2pm on Wednesday.

Sound Therapy

Come and treat your body, mind and spirit to a wonderfully relaxing, soothing and restorative Balance and Bloom sound therapy. I am a professionally qualified sound therapist and work in the heart of Brighton’s North Laines delivering sound therapy treatments to clients.

I love carrying out sound therapies because they are so effective. They are excellent for anxiety and depression, PTSD, pain management and general relaxation.

Sound therapy has many deep therapeutic benefits for us both mentally and physically.

Sound waves alter our brainwaves. By altering our brain waves we can find deep states of relaxation. By relaxing consciously and deliberately over time it can create a lot of wonderful things for us both physiologically and mentally.

Sound therapy helps with anxiety by getting the body out of ‘fight or flight’ mode, where the body reacts to stress by producing the stress hormone cortisol. It interrupts this process and instead puts us into ‘the rest and digest’ stage, invoking the parasympathetic nervous system. It allows your body to finally be able to fully relax into a state where it can do the work of deep healing. This restful zone is a place where our body’s cells can truly heal.

Research has shown that sound therapy relaxes our breathing and heart rate and reduces blood pressure. Each session starts with a meditation followed by a one hour treatment where you will be immersed in the magical, transformative and healing power of the vibrations. All the sound therapies I do are tailored to the individual and are designed to balance their subtle energies and bring harmony to the system.

In Ayurveda disease can develop from the mind, or energetic body before it shows up in the physical field, so working in this field is a great way to not only deeply relax, but to prevent and help heal imbalances.

Reserve yours by calling About Balance on: 01273 686882, or book in via my bookings page.

Look forward to seeing you.

Why I do what I do….

I became an Ayurvedic practitioner and sound therapist because I found these methods to be really effective for me nine years ago when all three of my doshas were out of balance and I was in very deep distress.

I understand how challenging life events can be and how painful grief and trauma feels, but I also know how much a person can heal, grow and transform from experiences which at the time seem insurmountable.

It has taken nine years to reach this point. Mostly because for the good of everyone, including me – I didn’t want to be an unhealed ‘healer’. I knew I needed to focus on building myself up first and showing myself the same compassion and love that I had always given to others.

I can’t describe how painful I have found life sometimes. The shifts that I have undergone have been profound lessons. A number of traumatic events meant that I went from being a sunny natured, happy cheerful and positive person into not wanting to wake up in the mornings. I felt completely lost. Ayurveda and sound therapy have transformed my life so much and have helped me to heal mentally and physically and come back into a balanced, healthy and harmonious state. I am so grateful for this sense of inner peace and contentment that I want to help others to experience deep healing too.

These are not experiences I would want to repeat, but I’m also extremely humbled and grateful for these life lessons. It might sound weird, but I see the beauty in all the painful things now. Pain has been my most powerful and transformational teacher. I had to learn to face it, sit with it and feel it in order to transmute it.

It has made me a stronger, kinder, less judgmental, more capable, more boundaried, healthier and more loving human. I am most proud of the fact that I haven’t lost my softness or warmth.

I truly believe that everything that happened has been a learning gift for my soul. It makes me understand what a wide range of people who come to see me may or may not be going through ( we all have our own unique challenges) I also believe it was a necessary initiation of fire to put me on the right path. I basically had wandered off the path of Ayurveda and had to be kicked back on to it! ( I really feel my Indian grandmother, a deeply spiritual woman who helped people heal with ayurveda had a major hand/foot in this!:)

I have been studying clinical ayurvedic medicine for six years now. The purpose of ayurveda is to ease suffering and keep people healthy so that they can pursue their spiritual goals and live out their purpose in life, or dharma.

Just remember that no matter what you are going through you can find your way through and out and be much, much happier. The best is yet to come. I’m living proof. If this resonates then I would be delighted to help you heal.

You can book in on Wednesdays and Sundays on the calendar below:

How to Deal with a Healing Crisis

Hello lovelies, I just thought I’d better post this – because if you come to see me for a full-body abhyanga you might well experience a healing crisis afterwards. This is nothing to worry about and is simply a natural part of the healing process.

The massages that I deliver are designed as a powerful way to rebalance the doshas – using special energetic points identified by Vedic physicians. The massages are very effective at removing toxins and releasing trapped emotions from the energetic body.

And their effectiveness can sometimes create a healing crisis. A healing crisis is when the body temporarily feels worse before it feels better. Because Ayurvedic massages are so powerful, they unblock energy and cause toxins to be pushed out. This detoxification process can cause headaches, fatigue, nausea and diarrhoea afterwards.

I have even had cases where the massages can bring on menstrual flow in cases of amenorrhea ( where the period has stopped for years previously due to stress)

They can also cause all sorts of emotions to come up that have previously been trapped in the body. But as the body and the energetic field detoxifies – there are lots of things you can do to support your healing process at home afterwards.

How to deal with your healing crisis

Firstly don’t panic, it’s actually a really good sign that your body is letting go of waste products and negative energy. Trust that your body is doing exactly what it should be. Be comforted by the fact this is a natural response and that you are just letting go of what you don’t need for your health.

Stay hydrated – drink lots of water to help your body flush out the toxins.

Having a hot bath will also help you to sweat them out.

Support your digestion by eating healthy foods and keeping your diet light and easy to digest.

Sit with your emotions. It’s all part of your natural healing process. Things have to come up and out to be healed and your doshas are rebalancing in your body while your mental waste and negativity is being processed out.

Observe your thoughts and feelings – knowing everything is temporary. If you need to cry do, crying releases toxins. LET IT ALL OUT!

Avoid sex for a couple of days afterwards -until your energetic field is restored and rebalances.

You might start to become aware of old patterns that have been holding you back, approach these with curiosity and love, Awareness is half the solution. This creates space to recognise healthier patterns.

Take a break from the TV and Internet and be sure to get an early night.

Be kind to yourself and congratulate yourself for doing the inner work.

Rest, rest, rest. Decline anything that doesn’t speak to your heart. You and your healing is your most important priority.

Sending you lots of love

Winter Solstice Special

Let’s hibernate together! I am co-hosting a soundbath at Saint Michael and All Angels’ church in Seven Dials in Brighton on Weds the 21st of December to celebrate the Winter solstice.

This special solstice sound journey will help you to align mind, body and spirit. The vibrations from sound baths put our brains into a brainwave state of deep rest.

We will gently guide you to go within, so you can lay down and relax to the sounds of the gong and tibetan bowls.

The solstice is traditionally known as a time of rebirth and the inner strength of your body to heal when it drops into the parasympathetic nervous system is powerful.

You will have the benefit of two professional sound therapists – me and Naomi from Resounding – so it will be a really beautiful surround sound vibrational experience for you to relax in.

Tickets are available here. You could also get a ticket for a family member, or friend as an early Christmas present.
